Scary questions…even scarier answers! How do you put your best foot forward instead of putting your foot in your mouth during a job interview?

Here are 10 TIPS for a Positive Interview:

1. Use the interviewer’s name (including Mr. or Ms.) from time to time as you speak. Don’t use his/her first name unless you are told to do so.
   
   
2. Use good grammar and good diction. Say "yes," not "yeah" and use complete sentences.
   
   
3. Listen to how quickly you speak and look for moderation. Don’t talk too fast. Don’t be afraid to occasionally pause…it makes you look like you’re carefully thinking about your answer.
   
   
4. But don’t fill pauses with "um," "uh," or "ah." Better to be silent while thinking. Also, don’t punctuate sentences with "you know," "like," "see," or "okay."
   
   
5. Give a firm handshake and maintain eye contact throughout the interview.
   
   
6. Use active verbs.
   
   
7. Don’t use the words "think," "guess," or "feel," which sound indecisive. Sound positive. Also, avoid "pretty good," or "fairly well." Talk about skills with positive words.
   
   
8. Research the company you’re interviewing with if it is for a permanent position. Look at their web site, their annual reports and any other company information you can find.
   
   
9. Offer examples of your accomplishments. Use illustrations, descriptions, statistics, and testimonials to support your claims.
   
   
10. Dress appropriately for the type of position you’re interviewing for. When in doubt, contact your Dickey Staffing representative for suggestions.
